About FC MessinaThe original Messina Football Club was founded in 1900 by a local returning to Sicily from London. Football in the town underwent many changes, setbacks and a bankruptcy during the twentieth century, as well as a spell in Serie A. After relegation in 1963 it took Messina over 40 years to climb back up to the top division, which they did in style with four promotions in six years, celebrating their 2004 re-entry into Serie A with a brand new stadium and strong performances. Messina is in Sicily; the nearest town to mainland Italy. Devastated by several earthquakes over the centuries, particularly the massive earthquake of 1908, Messina rebuilt itself repeatedly, only to be flattened once more by Second World War bombing. Messina is connected by train with mainland Italy (the train travels on a boat) and with other, more touristy, Sicilian towns: Taormina, Palermo, Catania and Siracusa.
